Nina McGowan is Professional Freediver, Artist & Climate Change Activist who seamlessly blends the worlds of extreme sports and art to inspire and educate diverse audiences. As a world record-breaking freediver, Nina has pushed the limits of human potential by diving to incredible depths on a single breath. She currently holds the Irish national record for the deepest dive by a woman, having reached 58 meters in the Philippines in 2023. Nina’s achievements in freediving go beyond her impressive records; she represents the relentless pursuit of excellence and the belief that age should never limit our physical achievements. Her advocacy for including Masters categories in competitive sports highlights her commitment to challenging the status quo and encouraging people to maintain high expectations of their physical capabilities, no matter their age.
In addition to her sporting achievements, Nina is a celebrated artist whose work focuses on climate awareness and ecological sustainability. In 2022, she won a significant public sculpture commission in collaboration with Trinity College Dublin. The project, titled ‘House on a Beach,’ aims to highlight the devastating impacts of climate change by placing life-sized houses made of charred indigenous wood on beaches north and south of the Irish border. As the tide rises, these sculptures will be submerged, symbolising the encroaching threat of global warming. This ambitious project is supported by the Irish Government and is closely tied to the €40 million Climate+ research initiative at Trinity College, showcasing Nina’s dedication to using art as a powerful tool for environmental advocacy.
Nina’s unique combination of artistic talent and sporting prowess makes her a sought-after speaker who captivates audiences with her engaging storytelling and thought-provoking insights. Her talks delve into the intersections of art, sport, and environmental activism, offering a fresh perspective on how these seemingly disparate fields can come together to drive positive change. Whether she’s discussing the mental resilience required for freediving, the creative process behind her art, or her commitment to addressing climate change, Nina’s presentations leave a lasting impact on her audience.
