World Champion athlete Olive Loughnane finished 35th in the 20km Racewalk at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. This was a credible performance given her ability at the time but she believed she could achieve considerably more. She set herself a cgoal of a podium position at a World Championships or Olympics within ten years of her athletic career. Certainly her arrival on the podium was not by accident nor without obstacles.
Olive is a four time Olympian. She represented Ireland at six World Championships. She was Irish Times Sportswoman of the year 2009 and was a recipient of a Texaco Award in the same year. Olive retired from athletics in 2013. Loughnane is a member of the Healthy Ireland Council and the Irish Sports Council high performance committee. She worked as a panellist for the 2012 Paralympics on Setanta Sport and was the subject of RTE documentary “Walk don’t run.”
Olivia compares the process of how she went about achieving her goal as being akin to running a business. Olivia speaks candidly of how she addressed the challenges she encountered on the road to success. She discusses her mental outlook at key points on her journey. Furthermore she explains the importance of creating a strong support team around her. She speaks about the personal characteristics necessary for success in sport and how the same characteristics can be applied in the business world.
Olive is an impressive communicator. Her drive, her passion and her self belief is evident when she speaks.
