Boxing Hall of Famer Barry McGuigan, known as ‘The Clones Cyclone,’ is celebrated as one of the greatest boxers of his generation. As an amateur, he won numerous titles, including a gold medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games at just 17. As a professional, he claimed the British, European, and World Titles. In June 1985, he captivated a television audience of twenty million, defeating Eusebio Pedroza to become the Featherweight Champion of the World—a bout voted ‘Fight of the Year’ by the British Boxing Board of Control.
Barry has written a popular weekly column for the Daily Mirror for over ten years and has commentated globally for networks including Prime Network, Star TV, Euro Sport, BBC, Sky, Setanta, and ITV. At his peak, his fights drew massive viewership, transcending sport to become a unifying figure in Northern Ireland amid sectarian violence.
Boxing Hall of Famer Barry faced personal tragedy early in his career when his opponent Young Ali slipped into a coma and later died, almost leading him to quit boxing. However, he persevered, becoming the British, European, and WBA World Featherweight Champion and was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Post-retirement, Barry explored motor racing, became a renowned boxing commentator, and won the cookery contest Hell’s Kitchen. He was instrumental in the film The Boxer, training Daniel Day-Lewis and choreographing fight scenes. Barry continues to train, promote, and manage young fighters and serves as the founding Chairman of the Professional Boxing Association, supporting boxers’ education and life beyond the ring.
As an entertaining speaker, Barry shares captivating anecdotes and insights into achieving success in the physically and mentally demanding world of boxing.
