John Lonergan

John Lonergan is one of Ireland’s most respected speakers, bestselling authors, and former public servants, renowned for his profound insights into leadership, resilience, mental health, human behaviour, and social justice.

A native of Bansha, Co. Tipperary, John devoted more than 42 years to the Irish Prison Service, beginning his career in 1968. He went on to serve as Governor of Mountjoy Prison for over 22 years and Governor of the high-security prison at Portlaoise for almost four years, overseeing some of Ireland’s most challenging correctional environments. Throughout his distinguished career, John became widely recognised for his compassionate and progressive approach to leadership, championing rehabilitation, education, and human dignity as the foundations for meaningful and lasting change.

John firmly believes that genuine transformation – whether personal, organisational, or societal, cannot be imposed. Instead, he advocates that lasting change is achieved through dialogue, trust, consent, and respect. In 2013, he published Parenting – Raising Your Child in Ireland Today, with all royalties donated to Barnardos, reflecting his lifelong commitment to supporting children and families. He is also a regular contributor to media discussions on social justice, leadership, and prison reform, and currently serves as the Tipperary Ambassador for Active Ageing.
